What is PLA FDM?
FDM stands for Fused Deposition Modeling, also known as FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication), is the most widely used 3D printing technology in the world. Unlike SLS or SLA, the raw material are filaments. It works by melting a plastic filament and extruding it layer by layer to build a physical object from a digital 3D model. The 4-step process for FDM work
- Design & Slice: A 3D model is loaded into "slicing" software. The slicer cuts the model into hundreds or thousands of horizontal layers and generates a toolpath for the printer.
- Loading the Filament: A plastic wire (filament) is fed into the printer's extruder.
- Melting & Extruding: The extruder heats the filament to a semi-liquid state (usually 190°C–260°C) and pushes it through a tiny, precision nozzle (typically 0.2mm–0.8mm in diameter).
- Deposition & Bonding: The printer moves the nozzle along the X and Y axes, depositing the melted plastic onto a build plate. The nozzle then moves up (Z-axis), and the next layer is printed on top. The layers fuse together as they cool, creating a solid, durable object.
