Our SLM metal printing services can print aluminum alloy, stainless steel and tool steel components in very complex structure. It can create internals, lattice structures and organic shapes. Which are impossible or extremely expensive to machine. These SLM metal printing parts can achieve >99.5% density, with mechanical properties comparable to forged metals. However, the surfaces for these printed one, it is relatively rough. Not as good as CNC machined one.

 

What is SLM Metal Printing

 

 

SLM Stands for Selective Laser Melting, it is a 3D printing technology for metal. Like the other plastic 3D printing technology, you can think of it like a tiny, super-powerful laser that draws the shape of your part, layer by layer, inside a bed of fine metal powder.

It's an additive manufacturing process, meaning it builds parts by adding material (melting powder) rather than subtracting material (cutting away from a solid block, like CNC machining)

The 4 steps process of SLM metal printing

1. Spreading very thin layer of metal powder across the build platform (20-60um thick)


 

2. Melting the powder layer to the exact shape by higher powder laser scan


 

3. Lowering the build platform by one layer thickness


 

4. Repeat the steps 1-3 for hundreds or thousands of times until the entire 3D part is finished
